Recurring character

Posted by Constanza on September 15, 1998 at 09:25:29:

Back to the LibraryOnce there was a old aged man over at Mellstock - William Dewy by name - one of the family that used to do a good deal of business as tranters over there
Jonathan, do ye mind?

And then there follows the bull story.

Now, wasn't Dick Dewy's father called William (in Under the Greenwood Tree)?

I don't have a copy of the novel by me, but I am almost sure. Well, perhaps it wasn't the father but the grandfather... though I think that the grandfather was the one who sang in the choir and hence all the trouble with Fancy and that the father was the one to play the fiddle. Anyway, at least I am sure they were tranters.
