I agree, the Sherlock Holmes short stories are great. In addition to the ones mentioned above, another one that stands out in my mind is "The Dying Detective" but they are really all very good and lots of fun to read.
You should also definitely check out the television series (mentioned in the previous post) starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. I think that he captures the essence of Sherlock Holmes magnificently.
