In response to Very Differant, written by Emmy on September 12, 1998 at 14:33:51
] ] Room With a View is just delightful. But it is quite different in that it is LOL funny, while AK is gut-wrenchingly passionate. IMHO] Yes, they are very differant. I don't actually compare the two books to eachother, except in the fact that Forster has such a tallent for putting words together, and making them really beautiful. I'm assuming it's because it was translated, but AK is really lacking in that; the words don't mean as much, if you get my drift.
but I didn't really find that so much. Maybe the words aren't as beautiful, but the story isn't as beautiful- it shows more the ugly side of society. I think that the words mean just as much- they are just as vivid, and just as emotive. Maybe what Susan says is valid- which translation you read. I read the Maude one- I've heard it's fairly true to the spirit Tolstoy was trying to achieve.
I hope I've caught your meaning right this time- on rereading this, I'm not so sure...
