With the long lost heir suddently appearing, and two long-lost fathers showing up, I couldn't help but think that Walpole was going into coincidence overkill, not to mention the really bizarre ghostly happens that are never explained, and the fact that Manfred gets away with his behavior by retiring to a monastery, and I almost choked when I read that the hero married Isabella for the sake of gloomy remembrances. Like you, I can respect it for being the first, but its mechanism is so creaky that it inspired laughter rather than fear in me.
