I recently read Gwen Bristow's Calico Palace which tells the story of the San Francisco 48ers, the people there before the gold was even discovered.
This was an amazing story about how the town of San Francisco grew practically overnight from a town of 900(can you believe it?) to a huge city integral to this country's economy. It tells the story of how life was for everyone during that time and especially for the main characters, who are people you have to respect for their courage and determination through out all their troubles.
If you are interested in American history or a wonderful romance book, you should definitely check this book out.
