In response to Is Tess too sad and depressing?, written by Constanza on September 04, 1998 at 15:58:41
Am I allowed to post here if I haven't read Tess in 11 years? I remember little of the book, but what I do remember is an incident that forever turned me off of Hardy--too sad! (I have the same problem as you do Constanza--a kind of happy ending addiction. Must be why I like Austen so much.)
the incident: (may be mostly misremembered--please forgive me in advance!)
Tess walking to work, has some kind of nice shoes--a prized possession, the light of her life--you know how shoes can be. Leaves them under a hedgerow so they don't get spoiled. Comes back to find them stolen.
Must Hardy have someone steal the poor woman's SHOES? Is nothing sacred?
