Back to the Library ] I imagine Hardy wanted to present his character in the most positive light--as a superdependable "Guardian" type who tried to follow all the rules of her society.


But if viewed in this light, it because bitterly ironic that Tess, who only wanted to follow the rules, becomes the one to break them most flagrantly. Just an something interesting, I thought...
