In response to My edition has it, written by Susan H on September 05, 1998 at 14:41:38
My edition was published in London by Macmillan in 1928 (passed down in the family, it's a beautiful thing) and the inner title page is laid out like this:
TESS OF
THE D'URBERVILLESA PURE WOMAN
FAITHFULLY PRESENTED BY
THOMAS HARDY
This makes it seem as though the subtitle is just "A pure woman" and the "faithfully presented" refers to the whole story in general IMHO. Do you agree? And who else has something different?
