JANE AUSTEN: A Life
By Claire Tomalin
Penguin, £7.99 (Non-fiction)
ISBN 0 140 25177 4
IT WAS once accepted that Jane Austen lived an
uneventful life as a spinster, but hers was actually a very full, even dramatic existence. Her first home was with a
wet-nurse in the village, after which she was sent to
boarding school, which she loathed. Her love for Irishman
Tom LeFroy was requited but thwarted, and the traumatic
sale of her childhood home halted her writing for years.
This exemplary biography captures Austen's spirit
beautifully. - KB

Bookserve also lists the hardback version as Jane Austen- a biography
