In response to Please help me find this poem!, written by Tracy W on September 04, 1998 at 11:12:46
] Ages ago, I read a poem that really moved me, but I can remember neither the author nor the title. Can you help?] The poem was written as a reaction against the Holocaust, and it speaks about how the poet didn't stand up for any of the groups that were persecuted, but by the time the Nazis came for him, there was no one left to stand up for him. Crudely paraphrased, it goes something like "They came for the Jews, but I wasn't Jewish, so I said nothing. Then they came for the intellectuals..." with one group after another being taken, until "then they came for me, and there was no one left to stand up for me."
] Does anyone know this poem?
"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionists.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
