Just wondering...

I've got two rather silly questions...
1. Why is it that whenever anyone elopes, they head straight for Gretna Green? What's special about Gretna Green? I've got a feeling its something about the marriage customs being different there, but is there anyone who can shed light on this little mystery for me?
and...
2. Why does Jane Austen name her own characters "Jane"? Was there such a shortage of other girls names? There was Jane Bennet (beautiful and kind) and Jane Fairfax (beautiful and accomplished) to name just two... Does it strike anyone else as odd??
