but "Macarena" is quite a popular Spanish name and one of the advocations (is that the word?) of the Virgin.
Anyway, I did a quick search on the web and found out that the dancer that in a way give origin to the song was called "Magdalena" but as there was a Mexican song with that title they substituted Macarena, which was the name of one of the Del Río's daughter.
And if the "glorious girl" was called "La Macarena" instead of "Macarena" it was because she was either low-born and uneducated or else very popular among men
