a novel recommendation

If you're interested in the Czech situation post-WWII, there is a brilliant novel called The Cowards by Josef Skvorecky which is about a group of students who enlist in the short-lived Czech army between the exit of the Germans and the entrance of the Russians. They mostly do it to get girls to notice them. The novel is just wonderful; funny, sad, and extremely well-written and I can't say enough good things about it!
