] I think that it is because Richard must have been a popular name for the villain or village idiot or something in the novels of JA's day, and she is saying that despite his name, he is NOT a handsome rogue but a perfectly ordinary person. NA being a parody, there are lots of bits that poke fun at literary stereotypes from Gothic novels.
Yes, that's how I've always read it. Maybe it's from villains such as Richard III or Dick Turpin.
