A High Wind in Jamaica

I just finished reading this book, aka An Innocent Voyage. by Richard Hughes. Has anyone here read this book? I thought it very good, especially the way the children were depicted as having their own culture and his view that children were mad, in the classic sense of the word. Stephen King also notes this in Danse Macabre , BTW. It was interesting to try to remember the way that I thought as a child which is a good bit different than now! I'm not sure that I buy or understand about Emily toward the end of the book, especially the death of the Dutch captain. Did she not remember that she killed him or what? And surely she knew she what a trial was and the sailors were on trial for their lives! I think her dad was right about questioning her intelligence about this.
I would really like to hear other people's insights into this book and the character of Emily.
