In response to What is it YOU like about JA?, written by Elizabeth/mr on August 06, 1998 at 19:27:52
] I have read 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility' and loved them both (especially P&P). I've bought the videos, and the mug (!) but I have a problem!
] When anybody asks me what it is I like so very much about JA I just can't give them a decent reply.
] I can't put my finger on exactly why I think she was so talented and had the ability to characterise so well. I would be VERY interested if ANYBODY and EVERYBODY could tell me why they like Jane Austen because it may help me work out why she is my favourite author.
] Please don't hesitate to reply - I'd be interested in any views you have to offer. Thank you.
Indeed, Austen is a genius at developing characters, and she is humorous and she is perceptive. My personal love affair however, is with her absolutely, incredible and unparalleled articulation. She is a master of the English language. I mean what can compare to Lizzie's "From the beginning, from the first moment I may almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form the groundwork of disapprobation, on which succeeding events have built so immoveable a dislike.." and Anne Elliot's " I hope I do justice to all that is felt by you, and by those who resemble you. God forbid that I should undervalue the warm and faithful feelings of any of my fellow-creatures. I should deserve utter contempt if i dared to suppose that true attachment and constancy were known only by woman....All the privelage I claim for my own sex(it is not a very enviable one, you need not covet it) is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone." No one says it like Austen! -Maire
