Lovely book! I suspect you´ve rather exhausted this topic, so just a little thing: it was so superbly well translated to modern times that I remembered the last time I chuckled with mirth because of the skill of a "translator". And that was with the Name Of The Rose: Eco just happened to remove all his present university fights, rivalry and colleaques to this monastery in the past. And because the detective is in modern times often a retired policeman, his detective is a retired Inquisitor.:-)
I also love the open form in L&L, when the story within a story evolves. Rather like French Lieutnant´s Woman.
