In response to "Lolita"-appropriate for 15-year-old?, written by AmandaB on August 02, 1998 at 22:33:39
Has anyone here read it, and if so, would it be all right for a 15 year old to read?
Lolita isn't a pornographic book by any stretch, although it does make explicit reference to the urges of a pervert. It's a very great, in some respects ugly, book but the ugliness has more to do with the nature of the main character and his obsession rather than with any sex scenes the book contains. The average episode of Jerry Springer has more degenerates than anything you'll see in Lolita. But it does require a very high level of literary sophistication to grasp and appreciate the wondeful things about the story, and I wonder if a 15 year old might not spend her reading energies more productively at this stage of her life. In a sense it would be like her reading, say, War and Peace or something. For certain books we're not really ready until we have some adult experiences under our belt. I've read Lolita a number of times myself and it IS one of the greatest of books.
