I remember I hated learning to read, and then when I was 6, my parents gave me "the Wizard of Oz" and I was gone. From then on, whenever I'm visiting home, they tell me to stop reading so much! I think the earlier you start, the better, and it also really helped that no one in my family is much for TV. It was rarely on, and I almost never watched it, so there wasn't that distraction.
