Criteria?

... The thought was that it might be interesting and provoke some discussion similar to the discussion over the 20th cent. list.
After I posted my Alice suggestions, I started thinking about how we decide what goes on the list. Some of the books on the twentieth century list are books I managed to slog through but would never want to touch again, whereas some on our nascent 19th century list I've already read multiple times. There are also books that I've reread for fun but know don't belong on a list of greats. What do you think makes a book great?
