I haven't read On the Beach; I decided not to after taking a look at the end. ;-)
But, have you read either Pied Piper or The Rose and the Rainbow? Both are beatiful though rather poignant. The first one is about a man who has lost his only son just at the beginning of WWII and he is on vacation when England enters into the war, and he leaves the hotel he is staying at and starts collecting children on his way back home. The other is the story of an aviator.
