Back to the Library The only Australian writer I can think of at the moment is Nevil Shute, but I think he is an extraordinarily powerful writer. Anyone ever read "On the Beach"? I had nightmares for a week after I read that.

A couple of years ago, I had to do some traveling around, and I took the unabridged audiotape of On the Beach with me....thank goodness I was driving alot of miles, because I was able to listen almost non stop to this story of the ultimate disaster of nuclear war. I have horrible fears of being nuked as it is...and always have had, since I was a child and saw all those "Civil Defense" signs on public buildings, and public service ads on TV showing mushroom clouds and radiactive fallout. All the while I listened to On the Beach, I just held my breath, wondering: "Will Australia be spared?"...and as each place in the North succumbed, I would feel worse and worse. That last chapter, particularly, is a stunner...

One thing it did do was to start me thinking about such a thing happening...and, if you keep track of world events, it is just as likely now as it was then...

OK...I know, no politics...so I will stop..sorry! But, yes I would highly recommend On the Beach....and also highly recommend stocking up on a few boxes of tissues to keep close by as you read...your heart will be wrung from start to finish...
