Thanks for the accurate quotes. Certainly the judges and the Modern Library are aware that their selections would stir debate. In fact, that's what they intended, although it may be possible that they made choices just to rattle a few cages!
One of the judges was A.S. Byatt. I've read some of her comments on the list, and I do think she was looking to spice up the debate a bit.
