I'm a huge huge fan of Spanish-language literature (Latin American and Spain). My favorites are Gabriel Garcia Marquez (of course), Jorge Luis Borges (the master of short stories) and Miguel de Unamuno. But I can't find anybody else that I know who shares this interest with me.
Unamuno!!! Niebla ("Fog" or "Mist")is a great Spaniard novel.
Borges is not one of my favorite writers... perhaps because I have not made the effort to try to understand him. I've only limited my borgean reading to school assignments. I have to agree with you, Jorge Luis Borges is undoubtedly the master of the Hispanic-American Boom short stories.
I highly recommend Julio Cortazar's short stories, specially "Letters from Mom" (The Secret Weapons). If you love García-Márquez magical realism and Borges stories... you will truly enjoy Cortazar's Fantastic Literature.
