] In short, I certainly wouldn't consider this list all-conclusive...for example, a Canadian writer I enjoy alot is Margaret Atwood (The Robber Bride, The Handmaid's Tale) You could argue as to whether or not she should be on such a list...but she does write well, and I think her stories say something about humanity.

I can't read Barbara's post (technical glitch) but one of the authors I really enjoy is (was) a Canadian: Robertson Davies. The Deptford trilogy in particular is very interesting: overlapping stories told from very different points of view, very different styles. I also liked Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and the more recent Alias Grace.
