Another book that mentions JA called I Capture the Castle

Back to the LibraryI think Kate was asking for books that mention JA. ICtC is by Dodie Smith. She also wrote 101 Dalmations, The Starlight Barking, The Town in Bloom, It Ends With Revelations, A Tale of Two Families, and The Girl in the Candlelit Bath.

ICtC is narrated by Cassandra Mortmain, a very engaging heroine very much like Lizzy. She has a poor family, an eccentric father, and a very pretty sister (named Rose) so all of JA fans will feel right at home. Their lives are turned topsy turvy by the Cotton family which consists of a lively mother and two very handsome sons.

Here is a sample: (conversation between Rose and Cassandra)

"Did you think of anything when Miss Marcy said that Scoatney Hall was being reopened? I thought of the beginning or Pride and Prejudice where Mrs. Bennett says 'Netherfield Park is let at last' And then Mr. Bennett goes over to call on the rich new owner."

"Mr. Bennett didn't owe him any rent," I said.

"Father wouldn't go anyway. How I wish I lived in a Jane Austen novel!"

I said I'd rather be Charlotte Bronte.

"Which would be nicest- Jane with a touch of Charlotte or Charlotte with a touch of Jane?"

This is the kind of discussion I like very much but I wanted to get along with my journal so I just said: "Fifty percent each way would be perfect"...
