I spent my first reading of the first three letters trying to figure out who was who. I would like to compare notes and see if I have it straight.
Previously of Vernon Castle we have:
Lady Susan Vernon (a widow)
Mr. Vernon (her husband, recently deceased)
Frederica Vernon (age 16, their child)
At Langford we have:
Mr. Manwaring
Mrs. Manwaring
Miss Maria Manwaring (Mr. Manwaring’s sister)
Mr. James Martin (engaged (?) to Maria Manwaring)
At Churchill we have:
Mr. Charles Vernon (Younger brother of Mr. Vernon)
Mrs. Catherine Vernon (nee deCourcey, his wife of 6 years)
Their children (3?), one of whom is named Frederic
In London we have:
Mrs. Alecia Johnson (friend and confidant of Lady Susan)
Mr. Johnson (her husband, formerly a guardian of Mrs. Manwaring)
Also in London, On Wigmore Street we have:
Miss Sommers (who runs a school (?) for young ladies)
Somewhere (?) we have:
Lady DeCourcy (Mother of Mrs. Vernon)
Lord DeCourcy (Father of Mrs. Vernon)
At Parklands, we have:
Reginald DeCourcy (brother of Catherine Vernon, Son of Lord and Lady Decourcy)
Mr. Smith (his friend, who has recently visited Langford and is acquainted with the Manwarings as well as Lady Susan and Frederica)
Is everybody there? Is everybody in the right place? As far as I can tell, at this point, we do not know Lady Susan’s age, although we might presume that she is at least in her late 30’s/ early 40’s since she has a 16 year old child.
