You're absolutely right about Patrick White: a glaring omission. But I thought Gatsby was an intriguing choice for #2, one that I would never have expected but that, maybe, on reflection, makes some sense. I'll have to read it again. But then, that's the value of these lists: you start pawing through some of these books again to see if they're REALLY that good. And I think John Updike should have been one of the judges; he's the best judge of literature around and is, not incidentally, very open to women and to non-American writers.
