] Kate, can you recommend a Patrick White book, if I were to read just one? I'm completely unfamiliar with him, probably my own fault, but perhaps I'll also blame it on the American educational bias (unless he's written since the 70's, in which case I have to blame Jane).

Hard, Jane, he's pretty inaccessible at the best of times, and it's ages since I read any of him. A Fringe of Leaves is pretty good, I vaguely remember. Any one else?
