In response to This week in the Library!!, written by Kate on July 12, 1998 at 11:32:14

Back to the Library ] I am trying to put a list together for the recommended reading board of all the fiction we know of which alludes to or quotes from JA.

] So far I have:

] Lions and Liquorice and BJ's Diary - as updated versions of P&P

] Cold Comfort Farm - several references to JA - the heroine wants to write a novel "as good as Persuasion"

] Le Divorce - which has a chapter beginning "It is a truth universally acknowledged..."

] I understand there's some reference to Emma in "The Bachelor Brothers Bed and Breakfast" but I don't know the details.

] Oh, and of course Kathleen T's Cory Bauer has a friend with cats called Darcy and Elizabeth... ;-)

] Any others?

Stella Gibbons' novels are rife with illusions to Jane Austen. If you ever undertake to read them all, it's a fort of game you can play as you read.

I'd like to add Susan F_____, can't remember the name( HC should know), who published only a few years after JA herself adn was called the Scottish Jane Austen.

Also Elizabeth Bowen and Angela Thirkell are both full of JA references.
