I think it may only reflect the differing levels of sibling intimacy in large families. Many people I know from large families are usually closest to the siblings nearest in age to them. Unless, there's a sib of the same gender who is just outside this rule. Most likely JA, from a large family in her day, gigantic today, experienced multiple levels of intimacy depending on the family member's position in the family and gender.
