This is from "The Semi-detached Couple" by Emily Eden
and do you object to my reading novels, if Lady Eskdale says there is no harm in them? They look very tempting, particularly one called Pride and Prejudice.
Also, in "The Civil Contract" (GHeyer), the heroine is a great reader and I remember one scene where she tells her husband she is waiting the latest novel by the author of S&S.
