"One Hundred Years of Solitude"

Has anyone out there read this work? I'm about half-way through it, and I find it seems so real and yet so filled with fantasy and "flight of ideas" at the same time. I'm having a hard time putting it down, enjoying it very much, but also having a hard time understanding what the point is after all.
Any opinions?
