This is from the intro to my copy
"Austen left hints as to how Emma's story was to unfold: according to Cassandra, Emma was "to decline an offer of marriage from Lord Osborne, and much of the interest of the tale was to arise from Lady Osborne's love for Mr Howard and his counter affection for Emma, whom he was finally to marry" (It is not clear whether the "Lady Osborne" here refers to Lord Osborne's sister, Miss Osborne, or his widowed mother.)
So a little different to the P&P plot....
Would have been a bit weird if Lady Osborne snr had been after Mr Howard...
