Okay, so he particularily was Not the Hero, and if you've only seen the movie, I admit they didn't do a very good job of portraying him (though its a shocker since Howard is simply wonderful in other movies!! BTW, anyone heard of that anecdote, where Margaret Mitchell, thrilled that he'd be playing Ashley, sends him a letter of congratulations, and he replies, something to the effect of: I am very honoured at being selected to play a character in that Novel of yours whose Name has slipped me for the moment. !!!!) But when I first read the book as a twelve-year old kid, I remember liking him throughout the story, until I finally realized that Rhett was supposed to be the hero. I guess my taste has always been with those very refined gentlemen kind of guys, and Rhett was just too much the bold, brassy adventurer, though I suppose it was people like him and Scarlett who really shaped America, if you think about it. . . . I mean, you couldn't be so refined and elegant when there were new frontiers to be explored, a new world to conquer and struggle to live in . . .
