It always seemed to me that both Scarlett and Melanie were incredibly strong women. If I were caught up in a war, I would be glad to have either of them by my side. I would feel braver and stronger myself for the companionship or either one. Better yet, let me have them both. One would keep my faith and my moral compass on track while the other would keep me active and making practical decisions.
What Scarlett needed was a Mr. Knightly to guide her and help her correct herself instead of Rhett who always encouraged her in the wrong ways.
