On my list of recommendations, I left out a book singularly well suited, I believe, to the denizens of this board. It is Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull; a marvelously subtle fantasy in the form of an epistolary novel occuring at the midpoint of the 19th century. It begins when a young man suddenly disappears, is thought dead by his friends and relations, and suddenly reappears, to his own surprise, three months later... More it is impossible to say, without infringing on future enjoyment of the book, by imputing prior knowledge.
