I thought Julien and Mathilde were made for each other and was interested to learn that Stendhal knew someone like that!
Stendhal was in love with a woman named Mathilde and his character of the same name was based on her, but she did not return his affections in the least. He seemed to greatly admire her, but she did not seem to understand him.
