] ] I would be really interested in which villian you find most interesting and why.

IMHO, villains aren't Jane Austen's strong point. The nastiest of the lot, Mrs Norris, just doesn't compete with some of the great villains of literature, especially those from Dickens (Uriah Heep, Fagin) or Shakespeare (Richard III, Iago).

The trouble with JA is that she's resolutely sane, and tells us merely of the exceedingly disagreeable, rather than the truly wicked.
