] I'm a Thomas Hardy fan - he can create pictures through words like no one else. I would recommend that you start with _Tess_ or _Return of the Native_. I've started _Jude_ several times and just haven't had the patience to get through it. It demands a lot of concentration. You might also want to read some of Hardy's poetry.

Far From the Madding Crowd butThe Return of the Native is considered by most to be his masterpiece. I liked it also. It was on PBS not too long ago. His descriptions are so vivid. Though almost all his books deal with sad themes. They are a fine read.
