I'm a Thomas Hardy fan - he can create pictures through words like no one else. I would recommend that you start with _Tess_ or _Return of the Native_. I've started _Jude_ several times and just haven't had the patience to get through it. It demands a lot of concentration. You might also want to read some of Hardy's poetry.
