Recommended read: The Brontes went to Woolworth's

Back to the LibraryHas anybody else here ever read this? I first encountered it a few years ago: a very strange, imaginative and funny book, by Rachel Ferguson, set and written in the 1920s or 30s and republished by Virago.

It's about a family of girls/ young women and mother (no father, in best storybook tradition), who create an imaginary world for themselves based on real people... but then they start to meet the real people and have to try to link their fantasies to what they're really like... (and the Brontes do make an appearance). If you've ever imagined yourself talking to a fictional character, or invented stories about famous people, you will find this a very interesting read, because it's not blind to the dangers of fantasy, or how people with good imaginations can really hurt other people.
