Completely agree here. Most of the sparkling dialogues were cut down or lost. And the movie is rather gloomy whereas the novel is one of JA's sunniest.
and played up the Gothic Horror aspect of it.
But on the other hand, you must bear in mind that it is an adaptation. If the production wanted to convey the same impression that the novel had on the original audience, I guess that overplaying the gothic horror was required.
BTW Bonnie, we had a group read of NA in December; a visit to the archives may prove interesting.:-)
