I was speculating on similarities

It seems to me that there are some similarities between PP and The Watsons (that is no surprise, I always "see" similarities except where other people do, cf. LMA ;-p)).
Let me explain. You have Emma living at a place "beneath" her, with two disagreeable younger sisters and an affectionate elder one. She is noticed by a high-rank man whom she dislikes because of his manners. There are two other men: Mr Howard, good and polite, and Mr. Musgrove, a show-off. Emma seems about to be bossom friend with Miss Edwards.
So, this is my far-fetched theory.
As the girls should be desperate or at least in need of forming suitable connexions (sp?), JA thinks of this entailment business and therefore does away with the brothers. Then, there is no need for Emma to have been raised by an Aunt (hey Michelle, another for your collection ;-)) as a larger income makes it possible for a better education. Then perhaps she merges this idea with the draft for PP and bingo!
Well, it might not be probable, but it is still possible! ;-)
