Back to the LibraryGosh!! When did Lady Catherine display sense. I admit that my memory is likely to be clouded with dislike of her, but I cannot remember her displaying sense.

] ] Let's hear a list of Mrs Norris' likeable points :)

] Well, ok, I'll bite.

] 1) She would have been a better mother of nine on a small income than her sister!
] 2) She was honest--in regards to money and in expressing her opinions
] 3) She had a strong desire to be useful.
] 4) She was instrumental in getting Fanny adopted.
] 5) She was capable of strong emotional attachment--mostly to money, but also to Maria
] 6) She was energetic and active
] 7) She helped make clothing for the very poor

] ] (and Lady Catherine de Bourgh's for that matter, or Mr. Collins')

] Lady Catherine had sense and some degree of judgment, also candour with regard to her feelings. Mr. Collins wishes to please and seeks to be liked. He is not a drunkard nor a vicious (gambling, adulterous, etc) man. Negative virtue may not be positively likeable, but neither is it inconsiderable in view of the possible alternatives.

] On another topic, may I ask what biography of Dorothy L. Sayers has the information about her Jewish lover? I had not known about this, though I knew she had a child out of wedlock. (I've been reading the Cold COmfort Farm threads in the Archives, having just finished the book.) Thanks for any info on the Sayers bio.
