I'm of the opinion that she did write it later in life--at least a year or so later. The similarities between the Fanny/Henry and Jane/Frank(Emma) relationships are many. The big difference is that Frank is, in the end, a decent chap--he grows up, which Henry never does. My theory is that either Austen was dissatisfied with what she did to Henry, or she wanted to write the other side of the Fanny/Henry story, so she wrote Jane and Frank into Emma.
