Back to the Library ] ] I just finished reading this novel by Evelyn Waugh, and had to say it was really touching stuff. But I have a question - can Sebastian and Charles' relationship really be gay? I mean, I know they loved eachother, but I didn't think it was in that physical way, I thought they were just really really good buddies. And for anyone who's seen it on film, how do they portray that?

] The miniseries, from memory, didn't have them actually in bed together, but I seem to remember there might have been a couple of kisses?? And Sebastian was about as camp as could be ;-)

I read the book ages ago and can't comment as well as I'd like. But I did see the miniseries a few times (love those repeats). I don't remember any scenes where there was actually the kind of physical contact between Sebastian and Charles that would say, "We're gay," but things were implied. I often wondered myself if they were physical lovers. I do remember that they sun bathed together nude on the roof at Castle Howard. (I forget the fictional name). Julia came up to the roof and Charles was very embarrassed as he covered up.

Clearly, Sebastian was homosexual, and he lived with that sleezy man with the bad foot who used him for his money in Morocco. Charles, who may have entertained homosexual thoughts in his youth, did not choose that lifestyle after university. He married, had children, divorced, and then was engaged to Julia (she broke it off, all that guilt).

BTW - who remembers that Sebastian's younger sister, Cordelia, was played by Phoebe Nichols, who plays Elizabeth Elliot in P2?
