I will be the first one to admit nearly total ignorance as to what is a Romantic versus Gothic versus Modern versus Realist versus .... I am an engineer, not an English teacher. But I do have a question.

I can definitly see a relationship between Jane Eyre and The Count of Monte Cristo and The Scarlett Pimpernel. Those, I believe, are recognized by nearly everybody as romances. But to say that Elizabeth Bennet belongs in the same class as Edmond Dantes or Heathcliff would push belief beyond even Aunt Jane's sense of humor, don't you think? I wouldn't even include Fritzwilliam Darcy in the same class as Phineos[sp] Fogg, though they both are very proper Englishmen. Would you?

If not, please enlighten me.

Mark
