In response to Recommendations please, definitive editions of Jane Austen works , written by Cath W on June 07, 1998 at 21:09:20

Back to the Library ] Can anyone recommend the best edition(s) of JA's work and a brief reason?

] Also, please tell me what are the pros and cons of R.W. Chapman's The Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen?

I think you just named the best edition! Chapman was considered THE JA authority; he's gone through all the printed editions and noted any discrepencies, he has extensive footnotes and chronologies, character lists, etc. They're wonderful.

I have seen the six volume editions available on occasion for $40-50-- (usually $100) an amazing bargain-- from the Oxford University Press. Their toll-free number is 1-800-451-7556 if you'd care to check and see if they are still on sale or to get a catalog.
