In response to Recommendations please, definitive editions of Jane Austen works , written by Cath W on June 07, 1998 at 21:09:20
] Can anyone recommend the best edition(s) of JA's work and a brief reason?
] Also, please tell me what are the pros and cons of R.W. Chapman's The Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen?
I think you just named the best edition! Chapman was considered THE JA authority; he's gone through all the printed editions and noted any discrepencies, he has extensive footnotes and chronologies, character lists, etc. They're wonderful.I have seen the six volume editions available on occasion for $40-50-- (usually $100) an amazing bargain-- from the Oxford University Press. Their toll-free number is 1-800-451-7556 if you'd care to check and see if they are still on sale or to get a catalog.
- Thanks, Cheryl, it is a great buy.. nfm ;d) Cath W 23:14:09 6/09/98 (0)
