Back to the LibraryA "Liberal Unionist" was someone who split off from the Whig/Liberal party and moved towards the Tory/Conservative party over the struggles to pass some form of Irish "Home Rule" in the 1880's etc.


There were aristocrats in both parties, and having someone say that Liberal Unionists were only good enough to invite in after dinner is a kind of caricature of snobbish ideas of narrow social circles...
